From building multiple successful businesses, Derek understands the importance of bringing in high-paying jobs to support the community. Currently, parts of the district do not have access to these types of jobs, especially in El Paso County where the median income is around $48,000, which is $15,000 less than the median income across Texas. By using practices from running these successful small-businesses, Derek will fight in Austin to bring high-paying jobs to the district by promoting investment in our communities.
Protecting Life
Derek believes that the sanctity of life begins at conception. As a devout Christian, Derek is committed to taking every possible step to support the unborn. Life is God's greatest gift. Derek fully endorses the "Heartbeat Act" legislation that was passed during the 87th Texas Legislative Session. Derek will continue to fight for any measures necessary to ensure life is protected.
Energy Independence/
Lowering Gas Prices
Texas is in a unique position compared to most states in the United States, with the capabilities of drilling for oil and gas across the state, Texas can bolster the state's economy and help grow funds for Texas Public Education. With Derek coming from the energy sector he will provide key insight on how innovation and investing in energy independence can provide the state flexibility and help grow the state's economy while at the same time helping Texans at the gas pump with gas prices coming down.
Border Security/Securing the Border
With the inaction by the Federal Government, Derek believes that Texas must step up to protect all Texans. Derek fully supports Governor Abbott's Operation Lonestar Policy. Derek also believes that we need a physical barrier at our southern border and supports Texas actions to resume the building of the Border wall that the Biden Administration halted. With most of the counties in Senate District 29 bordering Mexico, we must work to find solutions for the influx of illegal immigrants during this ongoing border crisis.
2ⁿᵈ Amendment
As a stout supporter of the 2ⁿᵈ amendment, Derek fully supports the recent passing of Constitutional Carry within the state of Texas. Derek believes that our right to bear arms should never be impeded, and will constantly fight for the right for Texan's to bear arms.
Education
Derek believes that all students shouldn't be restricted by a zip code. Students across Senate District 29 should have equal opportunities for a quality education. Texas students should not be measured by standardized tests, rather a need to be measured on the work they do throughout the school years and the best interests of each individual student.
